Level 6 Food Scientist Degree Apprenticeship Programme

The Unilever Research and Development degree apprenticeship scheme in Colworth is your opportunity to join an exciting and challenging area within Unilever. Our apprentices follow a structured and challenging academic programme to achieve a BSc Honours degree (aligned to Foods Professional degree apprentice standard), as well as working on real projects with world renowned scientists that deliver to some of the 2.5 billion consumers who use a Unilever product everyday.

As a R&D Refreshment Degree Apprentice, you will work with the Research & Development Refreshment teams leading the way in developing new products in Beverages and Ice Cream. Over the 5 years you will study for a BSc while experiencing working in different aspects of Refreshment Research & Development, whether it is in the Ice cream Global Design Centre to develop Ice Cream Products for the global market, designing and utilising new technology to develop products for innovations truly ahead of the competition; or in Beverages delivering world class innovations in great tasting drinks that meet the vitality needs of our consumers or in the Discover team whose aim is to be the primary source of sustainable, new science bringing great inventions for Unilever long-term competitiveness.

WHERE ARE THEY BASED?

Location: Unilever Colworth – Colworth Science Park, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Grade requirements: At least 2 science A levels (or equivalent) at grade B or above – Chemistry, Physics, Biology and/or Math’s preferred.

Passion for Science: You need to show a genuine interest in the subject area.

Skills/Competencies required:

  • From the moment you join the scheme you will be working on real projects with real responsibilities and deliverables. We are looking for people with a passion to succeed and prepared to take on challenging work outside their comfort zone, an ability to meet deadlines both at work and with their studies. You should not be afraid to ask questions, learn new skills and speak up. Your input is just as important as the next person. You must be able to express yourself when working within such a large business environment. You will need to listen to people and communicate clearly to achieve your goals.
  • You must have the permanent right to work in the UK and have been a permanent resident in the UK for the last 3 years.

Level 6 R&D Packaging Degree Apprenticeship Programme

The Unilever Research and Development degree apprenticeship scheme in Colworth is your opportunity to join an exciting and challenging area within Unilever. Our apprentices follow a structured and challenging academic programme to achieve a BSc Honours degree as well as working on real projects with world renowned scientists and engineers that deliver to some of the 2.5 billion consumers who use a Unilever product every day.

The Packaging Research & Development Refreshment Apprentice is recruited as a specialist role. As a Packaging Research & Development Refreshment Apprentice (aligned to the Packaging professional degree apprentice standard), you will be a part of the Global Refreshment Packaging team leading the way in developing new sustainable packaging and products within the Beverages and Ice Cream categories. Over the 5 years, you will be studying for an integrated BSc in Packaging technology and as part of the Refreshment Packaging team, you will have the opportunity to rotate through the sub functions to develop your skills in Packaging Excellence, Design, Sustainability and Innovation project delivery.

Working in the packaging labs, you’ll get a foundation in packaging measurement and testing. You’ll work with the Designers to bring the Packaging journey to life with creative ideas and prototypes and with the Brand Packaging teams to really understand the needs of our consumers. You will be exposed to a variety of packaging materials, their manufacture and decoration, to the packing and filling operations, and finally to the delivery of great packaging experiences with our consumers.

WHERE ARE THEY BASED?

You will be based at Colworth Unilever R&D site in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Grade requirements:

As well as English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at grade 5 or above, you will have at least 2 science A levels (or equivalent) at grade B or above – from Maths, Chemistry, Physics, or Biology. This can be already obtained or predicted grades from current study. Please state your predicted grade in your application if you have yet to receive your results.

Interest in that subject area: We are looking for people with a real passion and genuine interest in Science, Materials and Food Packaging Skills required:

Level 6 Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship Programme

The Unilever Research and Development degree apprenticeship scheme in Port Sunlight is your opportunity to join an exciting and challenging area within Unilever. Our apprentices follow a structured and challenging academic programme to achieve a BSc Honours degree delivered via a blended learning approach with Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as working on real projects with world renowned scientists that deliver to some of the 2.5 billion consumers who use a Unilever product every day.

As an R&D Apprentice, you will work with the R&D teams in both Home and Beauty & Personal Care areas, leading the way in developing new products in Laundry, household and personal care products. Over the 4 years you will study for a degree in laboratory sciences whilst experiencing working in different aspects of R&D, whether it is in the Homecare Global Design Centre to develop laundry and household care products for the global market, designing and utilising new technology to develop products for innovations truly ahead of the competition; or in Beauty and Personal Care delivering world class innovations in great Haircare products working with brands such as Tresemme, Sunsilk and TiGi.

Level 6 Chemical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme

JOB PURPOSE

The job holder will work as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Centre pilot plant team in Unilever Research & Development Port Sunlight (located on the Wirral, close to both Liverpool and Chester), delivering high quality product innovations to support Unilever’s Home and Personal Care category innovation programmes. While doing this they will study part time at the University of Chester towards a BEng degree in chemical engineering. They will work closely with process development engineers, R&D scientists and pilot plant technicians to plan and execute pilot plant manufacturing trials to prescribed specification, hygiene and safety standards and will complete aspects of each of these roles in rotation.

WHERE ARE THEY BASED?

Location: Unilever Port Sunlight, Wirral; close to Chester and Liverpool

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ DELIVERABLES

  1. As a pilot plant operator, support safe and on-time in-full delivery of pilot plant trials. This requires operational support to process development engineers before, during and after manufacture including contribution to experimental design, resource planning, checking of equipment & process designs to ensure safe operation, recording & reporting of experimental data, and the review of trials.
  2. Management of raw material & finished product inventory (including the use of specialist computer systems) to ensure manufacturing efficiency and traceability, efficient use of storage facilities, and the maintenance of technical and safety databases for materials in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  3. Execution of processing trials, from raw material pre-weigh through to finished product storage, at pilot scale by operating equipment in a manner consistent with relevant SHE policies, Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practises, Hygiene Standards and the relevant experimental design for the study in question.
  4. Delivering quality by carrying out QC checks on products using analytical equipment such as pH and viscometers, accurately reporting values using digital tools and interrogating control and data acquisition systems for setpoints and actual values.
  5. Responsibility for the delivery of continuous improvement activities under the direction of the pilot plant manager and safety coordinator as part of our 5S and preventative maintenance programmes.
  6. Rotation across a number of roles including the above, to bring a multitude of skills and experiences into the AMC team and onward career.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

Grades: at least 3 A levels (or equivalent) at grade B or above, to include Chemistry and Maths
